Eddie Sez:

I'm that guy you remember from your squadron or flight department years ago who was always collecting manuals and regulations on the theory, "I'm gonna need that someday." So here I am, years later, with my own aviation library. I've tried to list the sources I've used on most of the pages of Code 7700 but I know I need to do more. Just to keep things straight I'll try to list them all right here.

The ones I am allowed to copy I've placed copies on line and the links will download them for you. Of course these are only as current as my failing attention span and efforts will allow. Make sure you have current copies if you are basing any decisions on them. Where I can't do that but can post a link, I've done that too. Finally, some of them are only available in print so I'll show you what the source is but from there I am afraid you are left on your own. Good hunting.

Oh yes, one more thing. Keep in mind I am an engineer by education and pilot by profession. That means I don't know the first thing about sourcing materials, ibids, etals, or any of that other Latin stuff.

I try not to use Jeppesen Airway Manuals wherever possible, preferring the primary source documents. As you can see below, there are many of these. Text Books, Professional Journals, and Other Books

Connolly, Thomas F., Dommasch, Daniel 0., and Sheryby, Sydney S., Airplane Aerodynamics, Pitman Publishing Corporation, New York, NY, 1951.

A very good book for its time, if you need to know how the aeronautical engineering world viewed something prior to the jet age, this will do it.

Davies, D. P., Handling the Big Jets, Civil Aviation Authority, Kingsway, London, 1985.

This was a classic for those who made the transition from props to jets in very big equipment, and it is still a very good read for someone who wants to know more about flying heavy iron.

Dole, Charles E., Flight Theory and Aerodynamics, 1981, John Wiley & Sons, Inc, New York, NY, 1981.

This is my favorite book on aerodynamics, bar none. Much of it repeats what you will find in Aerodynamics of Naval Aviators, but it is presented in an easier to digest format.

Gann, Ernest K., Fate is the Hunter: A Pilot's Memoir, 1961, Simon & Schuster, New York

This book gives you an idea of what flying professionally was like before the national aerospace system existed. Many will tell you this was the first real book on CRM, I'm not so sure. But it is an enjoyable read.

Hage, Robert E. and Perkins, Courtland D., Airplane Performance Stability and Control, John Wiley & Sons, Inc., 1949.

Unless you are really getting into the nuts and bolts of the title subject, this can be a bit tedious.

Hurt, H. H., Jr., Aerodynamics for Naval Aviators, Skyhorse Publishing, Inc., New York NY, 2012.

This is the most recognized book on aerodynamics in print today and it is very good. While I prefer the Dole version, Flight Theory and Aerodynamics, this version has more information in it.

Lopez, Alfred. Suppressed-Image ILS Glide Slope Antenna, ARL Associates Incorporated, Proceedings of the 51st Annual Meeting of the Institute of Navigation, Colorado Springs, CO, June 1995, pgs. 253-259.

If you want to know why your glide slope needle behaves oddly at times, this is what you need to read.

Restak, Richard, M.D., Mozart's Brain and the Fighter Pilot — Unleashing Your Brain's Potential, Three Rivers Press, New York, 2001.

While most of this book is devoted to teaching you how to improve your memory and thinking process, it does contain more than a few hints on how to keep your pilot brain functioning longer than your body wants to. I especially liked the chapter on mental hygiene.

Sobel, Dava, Longitude: The true story of a long genius who solved the greatest scientific problem of his time, Thomas Allen & Sons Canada Limited, Markham, Ontario, 1995

Just about every question you had about how the art of navigation was born is in here. By the time I read this I had already finished flying with navigators, I wish it had been written in 1979.

Stevens, Bob, "There I was . . ." 25 Years, TAB Books, 1992, The Village Press

These are not only the best Air Force cartoons every drawn, they give you a good taste of what it was like in the Air Force during the Vietnam era.

Vaughn, Dianne, The Challenger Launch Decision: Risky Technology, Culture, and Deviance at NASA, The University of Chicago Press, Chicago and London, 1996.

This is a long and tedious read, but it is the definitive guide to the Normalization of Deviance. You are probably better off reading the official "Report to the Presidential Commission on the Space Shuttle Challenger Accident," June 6th, 1986. But this is the book that really lays out what was the disfunctional decision making process at NASA leading up to the 1986 Challenger accident.
